Urarii Berselli ignites the local arts scene,  vibrating the spirit of a Polynesian goddess of music with her multiple talents as a singer, musician, and dancer. Known for her unique vocal style and captivating vibrato, her artistic expression acts as an ode to her Polynesian roots. From her early years immersed in traditional music and dance to her current role as a cultural ambassador, Urarii’s path highlights the powerful association of art and tradition which have provided her with solid foundations in becoming who she is in front of the rest of the world. This article explores Urarii’s world, revealing the influences that have shaped her, the values she cherishes, and her aspirations for the future of Polynesian art.

Early Influences and Artistic Origins

Urarii’s journey into the arts began at home. Her father, a party “aficionado” immersed her in the vibrant social gatherings and music of their community, creating an early appreciation for the cultural context. At just six years old, her mother enrolled her in dance classes, igniting a lifelong passion for expression through movement and music.

“My background and my culture have been the source, the very origin of my artistic expression,” Urarii reflects. While she acknowledges her appreciation for international music, her heart resonates most with Polynesian songs from Tahiti, New Zealand, and Hawaii, particularly those that address the struggle for cultural identity.

Musical Diversity and Influences

Her musical palette is impressively broad, ranging from 90s rap to contemporary sounds like Billie Eilish and James Bay. While she appreciates diverse genres, her performances are grounded in reggae—especially its more message-driven forms—and of course Polynesian music. Drawing inspiration from the vocal mastery of Maori singers and artists such as Stan Walker, The Green, Maoli, Kimie Miner, and Irie, she blends these varied influences, creating a uniquely rich and layered artistic expression.

A Voice for Polynesian Heritage

Legacy is central to her music and performances. During a three-hour show, she dedicates a significant portion to Tahitian songs, using her platform to highlight both the beauty and complexity of Polynesian narratives. While traditional Tahitian songs often explore themes of tragic love, she finds inspiration in Maori music, which boldly asserts a sense of identity and pride.

Her performances are molded to fit the context of her environment. In restaurants, she offers gentle background music that enhances the dining experience, while in bars, her upbeat songs encourage revelry and dancing. By considering her audience’s ethnic backgrounds and age groups, Urarii skillfully selects songs—ranging from classic Tahitian tunes to contemporary hits—that resonate with her listeners.

Balancing Art and Life

Urarii’s life is a busy one, as she juggles artistic pursuits with work and raising her son. Her weeks are filled with commitments, including work, dance rehearsals, and performances with her band, Ohaki. To manage her demanding schedule, she relies on meticulous organization and the support of her partner and family.

Legacy and Values

Dedication to instilling cultural values in her son is paramount for our diva. She emphasizes the importance of culture and heritage over the specifics of music and dance, hoping he grows up proud of his Tahitian roots. As a proud Polynesian woman, she embodies the values of cultural pride, authenticity, beauty, and talent. Urarii radiates this pride to everyone around her, believing her work promotes a better future for her community, particularly for at-risk youth who struggle with a sense of belonging.

Future Aspirations and Gratitude

Looking ahead, Urarii plans to focus on creating her own Tahitian songs and collaborating with other artists, such as Aremistic. She also aims to find a bassist for her band, ensuring the continuity of their performances and musical evolution.

Urarii expresses deep gratitude for her life, family, and the opportunities she has been afforded. Proud to be a Tahitian woman living in Tahiti, she cherishes her role in contributing to her community through her art. A strong connection with her bandmates and dance group fuels her passion, and she finds fulfillment in sharing her culture with others.
