The Hawaiian Mermaid from the West: Ha’a Keaulana
Through collaboration, cultural nuance, and a commitment to localism, our Aloha Edit Collection and Campaign highlights the profound bond between our Hawaiian cousins and their homeland. We’re thrilled to feature four icons, each embodying “Aloha ʻāina,” the Hawaiian term for a deep love for the land.
In the sun-kissed west of Oahu, Ha’a Keaulana stands as a living testament to the timeless bond between land and sea. Raised on the Leeward Coast, Ha’a embodies the spirit of her heritage, weaving together the past and present through her profound connection to the ocean. As the daughter of Big Wave Surfer and Stuntman Brian Keaulana and the granddaughter of surf legend Buffalo Keaulana, her lineage is deeply intertwined with the rich traditions of her ancestors.
Mākaha: The Heart of Ha’a’s World
Ha’a’s journey as a waterwoman is rooted in the waves of Mākaha Beach. For her, Mākaha is not just a playground; it’s a sacred space where she nurtures her connection to the ocean and her family’s storied legacy. Her harmony with the ocean in every moment and condition echoes the humble spirit exemplified by her grandfather Buffalo, her father Brian, and the many brothers and sisters in between.
A Rising Star in the Millennial Generation
In today’s millennial generation, Ha’a Keaulana has emerged as a standout figure. Known on social media as Kai(Ha’a)le’a Keaulana, she joyfully dances on the sea and into the hearts and minds of over 176,000 followers worldwide. Staying true to her roots and following her passions, Ha’a gained global recognition by simply being herself and living her extraordinary ocean lifestyle to the fullest.
A New Path in the Water and Photography
Following in the footsteps of her legendary family, Ha’a has carved out her own unique path. As a talented photographer, she captures the essence of Mākaha, revealing its beauty and the depth of her connection to it. Her journey in photography began at Waianae High School, where she was involved in an excellent media program that taught her the basics of working with still and video cameras. With a waterproof point-and-shoot camera and later a DSLR, Ha’a’s passion for photography blossomed. She also received invaluable advice from her uncles, who are legendary surf photographers.
Embracing Motherhood
In addition to her many talents, Ha’a is a new mother, adding yet another layer of depth and joy to her life. Her dedication to preserving her cultural heritage and sharing it through her photography ensures that the spirit of Mākaha and the legacy of her family continue to inspire and resonate with future generations. Through her lens, she shares the aloha spirit, fostering a deeper appreciation for the traditions and natural splendor of Hawaii.
Ha’a Keaulana exemplifies the harmonious relationship between the Hawaiian people and their environment. Her life and art embody the legacy of her family and the spirit of aloha, inspiring others to cherish and protect Hawaii’s natural beauty.
