In Kaua’i’ with Malia Manuel:
The Lioness of Surfing and Guardian of Hawaii’s Waters
Through collaboration, cultural nuance, and a commitment to localism, our Aloha Edit Collection and Campaign highlights the profound bond between our Hawaiian cousins and their homeland. We’re thrilled to feature four icons, each embodying “Aloha ʻāina,” the Hawaiian term for a deep love for the land.
Today, we present Malia Manuel, a fearless figure in the surfing world, born and raised amidst Kauai’s picturesque landscapes. Her journey began at the age of two, surfing with her parents along Kaua’i’s beaches. Malia’s natural talent quickly set her apart, and in 2008, she became the youngest female to win the US Open of Surfing at just 14 years old. This milestone marked her as a prodigy and paved the way for future successes, including earning the title of Rookie of the Year in 2012. One of Malia’s most remarkable qualities is her pioneering spirit. She has consistently been a fierce competitor on the World Surf League, representing a new generation transforming women’s surfing.
Malia Manuel’s story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of Hawaii and its people. From the rolling waves of Hanalei Bay to the world’s most challenging surf competitions, she balances composure and the ocean’s chaos, embodying skill, poise, and respect for the sea. Her love for yoga, running, and hiking, along with her ever-present smile and curiosity, reflects her authenticity in living life with Aloha. More than a surfer, Malia is a cultural ambassador and guardian of her ancestral waters, inspiring others to cherish and protect Hawaii’s natural beauty. Her journey, marked by elegance and humility, continues to inspire future generations to embrace their roots and safeguard their lands.
Our Interview with Malia Manuel: Her Favorite Spots on Kaua’i and in Hawaii
1. What are your favorite places to eat in Hawaii?
Fresh Bite Kaua’i is one of my go-to’s on the north shore of Kaua’i.
Sleeping Giant Grill is great on the east side of Kaua’i.
2. Any hidden gems or must-try dishes?
Kalalea Juice Co in Anahola — must try: Next Level Acai bowl
3. As a local surfer, where are the best spots to catch waves in Hawaii? Any tips for beginners?
Waikiki for the most all-around fun at any skill level.
4. Where do you like to hang out and relax in Hawaii? Any favorite beaches, parks, or local spots?
Hanalei Bay
5. What do you love about Eimeo? How does it reflect the spirit of Hawaii and your personal style?
Eimeo embodies the strong & feminine ways of our Polynesian ancestors. I feel connected to my culture when I wear my Eimeo pieces.
6. From the Eimeo collection, which dress/outfit is your favorite and why? How would you style it?
The Marau Dress and Tarita Dress have been some of my favorites from Eimeo. Besides the beautiful patterns, the fabric is perfect for tropical weather. Eimeo dresses are my statement pieces that don’t need much styling at all. 🙂
7. Can you share a memorable local experience or tradition in Hawaii that visitors might not know about but should definitely experience?
I think the best part about visiting Hawaii is just slowing down. Enjoying the breeze and letting the relaxing aloha spirit create a sense of rejuvenation from within. As for an activity, I would definitely walk through some of our botanical gardens (on Kauaʻi) and learn about the native plants we are trying to preserve through the next generations.
